THE QUEEN OF THE SEWING ROOM
Yesterday, the 9th of October, was a sad day for the members of the RefuMade Sewing Co-Operative as they said goodbye to Maya Berg. Having volunteered for Refugee Support at Katsikas Maya came to Cyprus on the 3rd of August. After many extensions to her original plan Maya had to move on after 10 weeks.
Maya has been a very important part of our team in Nicosia and was always happy to help wherever she was needed but her real home was in the Sewing Space. When Maya arrived the Sewing Space was in it's very early days and she was stepping into the shoes of Kathryn Casson, a very difficult act to follow.
Maya and Paula
Maya with the help of Paula Mesureta set about ensuring the Sewing Space became a place where everyone was welcome and could enjoy a friendly welcoming atmosphere. Maya is from Australia but very proud of her Norwegian heritage.
When Maya arrived the Sewing Space had about 15 members and as of yesterday that had increased to 28 an achievement she can be very proud of. Maya has played a very important part in setting up our RefuMade shop, she became chief photographer, was part of the team that made decisions on design and choice of material.
All the work in the Sewing Space did not distract Maya from all the other important work that goes on in The Dignity Centre. Her painting skills helped smarten up the Centre. She was often part of the Breakfast Cub team where we serve breakfast three times a week at the Caritas Migrant Centre and was always busy at our monthly "Let's Eat" event.

We are all going to miss Maya and wish her the best of luck with her future plans that hopefully will include a return to Cyprus.
